Ugh. This is already too much.

So I woke up this morning super excited about starting my cut, I guess I had this idea in my head that it was going to be super easy and fun; I mean how hard can counting macros really be? Well… fast forward like an hour and I was already on the phone with my husband almost in tears. My breakfast and lunch alone, which let me just add was a fruit smoothie (1 banana, BCAAS, 1 cup fruit & 1 cup almond milk), a granny smith apple, a natures valley peanut butter bar and 1 cup of my homemade Vegan chili HOW THE HECK was I already at 144g of carbs?! I’m suppose to only eat 177g of carbs a day, so cool… I had like 33g of carbs left for dinner. My first response…I’m going to die of starvation.

Side note, I’m using My Fitness Pal but only to track, I’m not listening to what it says needs to be my caloric intake or macros.

It was then that I had my breakdown (lol dramatic I know). Honestly, being Vegan a lot of our diet is comprised of carbs. Yes, fruits and veggies do have carbs in them lol. So I decided, that’s it, 1 hour in.. I’m done. But what else are husbands good for than picking you up off the floor (or bed) when you’re having a mental breakdown. Let’s just add that I’m not usually this emotional; it’s almost that time of the month.

He reassured me (he’s in the fitness industry) that we would figure this out together. Without getting all technical and blah blah blah, I got over myself and decided that if I gave up THIS easily well then how the heck would I ever last pushing myself that much more physically. Macros are JUST numbers. Yes numbers that you should (somewhat) follow and track daily but my life isn’t over just because I don’t stay within them and let’s be real Kaitlin, you’re not doing a show.

That being said, for the next month (give or take, probably for the next few weeks) I’m going to track my macros just so I have an idea of where I’m at, incorporate HIIT training into my workouts and see where that takes me. Currently I’m eating at the peak of my caloric intake meaning I’m consuming just the right amount of everything to not gain weight.

Pray for me, and my sanity haha and let’s see where we are at on Friday!

My first ever cut…

On Monday, March 20 I will be starting my first ever cut. Not necessarily with any goal in mind or for any particular reason other than Summer being around the corner and I want to see how far I can push my body and with that the results I can achieve.

I’ll be doing weekly checkins with my updated body comps, marcos (if any changes), weigh ins, my work outs and how I’m feeling mentally and physically.

I do have a end date in mind but that being said if I do reach my goal before hand I will shift everything into more of a ‘maintenance’ mode.

Starting this Friday (week 1) i’ll be uploading all my meal prep, workouts and updated stats! I will be going to the gym 5 days a week and working HIIT training into 2-3 of those days and I spend roughly 60 minutes at the gym.

Beginning weigh ins & macros

I’m 5’0, female (obviously), 26 years old and weigh 123 pounds (with clothes on).

My starting macros are: protein 101 grams, fat 52 grams, carbs 176 grams, fibre 18 grams.

I calculated my macros at this website H E R E but with that being said I may use Layne Norton’s website. It’s $10 a month and you have access to honestly THE BEST information, not only in regards to macros but everything fitness related. I’ll link his website H E R E and the link to Avatar Nutrition H E R E. Another reason why I love this website so much is that it when signing up it gives you the option to choose that your vegan and everything is adjusted to us plant based humans!

I’ll talk to ya’ll in my next post!

Ways to stay organized – monthly planner

p l a n w i t hm e..jpg

My holy grail. I’m planner obsessed. 2015 was the first time that I got a legit planner that was made for decorating with washy tapes, stickers and all those wonderful things. This year I upgraded to the larger planner and I love it even more! I got this one from Michaels, I’ll add the link here – PLANNERS  Michael’s is actually having a SALE on planners right now. Buy one get one free on all Recollections, Creative Year Spiral Planners & The Happy Planner (which is mine). Recollections is all the fun washy tapes, and stickers – I think a ‘washy tape’ annoynomus group needs to be created, honestly….I use mine everyday, it really helps with my anxiety and staying organized.

I love the colour (anything teal/turquoise) especially the way it makes the gold detailing and hardware pop!

I store all my washy tapes, markers, pens etc. in a tupperware container. I like having everything organized, makes planning more relaxing and fun!

Safe to say I’m a little washy tape queen, it just adds a little something special to each month. What are some of your favourite planners? I’ve picked up a few different ones here and there while in stores and they just didn’t do it for me. I’ve attached some places you can pick up planner accessories & actually planners. Leave me a comment where you get your planner accessories from, I want to built my collection 😉

my favourite vegan blogs

Among a long, long list of my favourite bloggers are these four inspiring ladies who feed make me smile, laugh and hungry.

Cooking With Camacho

“I originally created this blog before I was married in hopes to consolidate all of my recipes to one place. I constantly find myself squinting at my iPhone, hungry, standing in the kitchen desperately trying to find recipes I have written down through all my phone notes. The main purpose or rather goal is to share recipes because… well…who doesn’t love food?

Aside from high protein healthy recipes, I also want this to be a peaceful place where people can come for advice, tips, and tricks to living a healthy energetic life. Obstacles are what makes half of our life journey so I would like to help take some of the guess work out of making quality, whole food, plant based meals. Nutrition plays a huge role in our health; from body function to ageing, to recovery and repair. Just like the saying goes “you are what you eat”. My aim is to make each and every recipe as beneficial to your health as possible. Maintaining a diet consisting of high quality foods helps you to shine from within, life is good and you deserve to live it to the fullest.

My hopes are to inspire people from those who live very busy lifestyles, to the overly health conscious individuals that living a healthy vegan lifestyle is super simple and enjoyable. You will notice on most recipes I have included a “**Camacho Quick Tip**” these little tricks are meant to assist you in tailoring the recipe to your needs and preferences. They also let you know what to look out for during the cooking and baking process. Whether you have a million things on the go or are looking for something to do with your free time: I want to share my recipes and experience with you all; from cooking, health & fitness, to going Vegan.”

I’ve known Laura for a LONG time, before we were both Vegan, and it’s funny how going Vegan has made our paths cross again. Her love for animal welfare and cooking the most delicious foods always inspires me and is a constant reminder of why I went Vegan.

I love seeing her Instagram feed, reading her blog posts &trying to cook like her (emphasis on the trying). If you don’t already, follow her blog H E R E I hope she’ll inspire you as much as she did me.

I also desired a platform which would allow me to freely express my opinions regarding a wide variety of products including but not limited to: beauty, skincare, hair-care, supplements, and health food items. In addition, I enjoy posting my favorite recipes in hopes of inspiring others to try them. Motherhood has been an absolute joy to me and I love to share my ideas, suggestions, frustrations, and overall Mom-experiences with whoever is interested in reading them. “The word ‘boon’ means bean in Afrikaans (South African language), Anneen’s birthplace. It also means a blessing, a benefit or something to be thankful for.”

This past weekend, I went to Boon Burger, again..hands down still THE BEST vegan burger I’ve ever tasted. Everything from the patty to the sauce and gluten free bun created an explosion of perfectness in my mouth.

I got the bacun cheeze burger with fries and a lemonade. They season their fries with sesame seeds, something I’ve never had before and I don’t know why – it was so delicious.

bacun cheeze burger… grilled boon patty, mayo, dijon, a slice of cheeze, smoky bacun, pickles, red onions, tomatoes & lettuce.

The homemade coconut milk based ice cream comes in a cone, cup & milkshake. The texture, taste and consistency is better than any non vegan ice cream.

I’ve attached the menu here  they also have a kids menu & cater! They have locations all over so head on over to their website and visit a Boon Burger Cafe near you.

Is bread actually Vegan?

Ok, so I’m about to come at you with some astonishing news. It has been brought to my attention, that even though the ingredient list may fall under the category of being Vegan, there are some hidden things you need to look out for. Don’t make the same mistakes I did, but don’t be too hard on yourself either, we’re only human.

I did my research from some reputable resources and here are my findings.

Yes. (most) Bread is Vegan. I’ve actually been asked this question a lot and been told when I go out that eggs are used as a binding in their buns. My advice, ask the manager or head chef wherever you go if you’re not sure – better safe than sorry!

Actually, a lot of our favourite breads are indeed Vegan… and here we all are thinking that going Vegan makes us ‘skinny’, lol. Yes. Yeast is Vegan, so unless you have a Gluten allergy, like myself, you’re 1oo% good to go in that department.

I’ve attached a link from PETA to help you not stress in the grocery store. It’s a list of cryptic ingredients that unfortunately make it into our foods ‘without us knowing’, thus, making them not Vegan – beware…this list is ALARMINGLY long…

ANIMAL DERIVED INGREDIENTS LIST (includes some clothing items)

Linked below are also a few different Vegan starter kits, thanks to PETA and a blog I love Eating. But honestly, going Vegan isn’t as hard as many people make it out to be. Yes, we get plenty of protein, no we don’t only eat salads and we don’t ‘carb the f#$k up.’

There are a lot of Vegan companies out there, especially in the states and it’s starting to trickle over here in Canada. But Google and other Vegan Bloggers are your best friends. Knowledge is power, so educate yourself and stand behind what you believe in and what you believe is right. We’re given one body and one lifetime to live it in so take care of yourself and start to think about what you use to fuel and repair your body.

Lavender does what?!

A long over due blog post that I couldn’t stop thinking about.

If you follow me on Instagram than you’ll know that I’ve been obsessed with Lavender lately. So I took to the internet to gather some information on the benefits and uses of it!

Here’s what I found, and to be honest the most shocking to me was fact that you can eat Lavender….who knew?!

We got our lavender, as well as the essential oil from Fiori Oakville (yay for shopping local) and we STILL have the lavender(plant form), unfortunately the oil was used up due to the fact that I take way to many baths.

“Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” ~ John 12:3

I pulled this info from Organic Facts – Health Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil. I’m just going to mention the forms I used it for, because I know 100% that it works. You can read the full benefits here

  • Bug Repellent: The smell of lavender essential oil is potent for many types of bugs like mosquitoes, midges, and moths. Apply some of the lavender oil on the exposed skin when outside to prevent these irritating bites. Furthermore, if you do happen to be bitten by one of those bugs, the lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory qualities that will reduce the irritation and the pain associated with bug bites.

** SIDE NOTE.. I actually tried this for my dog and it 100% works!**

  • Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep which has made it a common recommendation for an alternative treatment of insomnia. Frequent studies on elderly patients have shown an increase in their sleep regularity  when their normal sleep medication is replaced with some lavender essential oil being placed on their pillows. It has such a relaxing impact on people that it can often replace modern medicine for sleep issues.

** I rub this on my temples, wrists, behind my ears and under my nose as well as breathing it on, works wonders**

  • Nervous system: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and anxiety issues. Therefore, it can also be helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity. It has a well-researched impact on the autonomic nervous system, which is why it is frequently used as a treatment for insomnia and also as a way to regulate heart-rate variability.

** I suffer from anxiety and this is definitely a nice replacement for previously used medication **

  • General Skin care: The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. It is used to treat various skin disorders such as acne, wrinkles, psoriasis, and other inflammatory conditions. It is commonly used to speed up the healing process of wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns because it improves the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil is also added to chamomile to treat eczema.

** This essential oil REALLY helped my acne. I use to get cystic acne, occasionally even after going Vegan but since I started adding this into my skin care routine I noticed a huge difference! **

Hope this can help someone else out, like it helped me! Enjoy xo
